The Psychology Behind Why People Love Quizzes
I dug into the research on why people take and share quizzes. Understanding the psychology changed how I design every quiz I build. I launched my first personality quiz in 2022 and watched in disbelief as it collected more responses in a weekend than my survey forms had gathered in a year. That sent me down a rabbit hole into the psychology of why people take quizzes. and more importantly, why they finish them and share them. Understanding the psychology transformed how I design every quiz today. The Self-Verification Drive People take quizzes primarily to learn about themselves. This is rooted in what psychologists call self-verification theory. we have a deep drive to confirm our existing self-concept. A quiz that promises to tell you which work environment suits you best is appealing because it might validate what you already suspect about yourself, or reveal something you had not articulated yet. This is why personality quizzes outperform knowledge quizzes on engagement. A trivia quiz tests what you know, which carries a risk of feeling inadequate. A personality quiz affirms who you are, which feels good regardless of the outcome. More guides are on the Quiz Hub Blog.
