Quiz Data Security: Protecting User Data in a Learning Platform
A quiz platform collects sensitive data about what users know and do not know. I audited my security and found gaps I did not know existed. Here is what I fixed. A quiz platform collects more sensitive data than most creators realize. Every answer a user submits reveals something about their knowledge, their reasoning, and sometimes their personal characteristics. A personality quiz might collect data about a user's psychological traits. An educational quiz might reveal a user's skill level, which could be sensitive in a professional context. I treated data security as an afterthought until a security audit revealed gaps that shocked me. Here is what I found and what I fixed. Encryption in Transit and at Rest The basics were in place. My platform used HTTPS for all traffic, which encrypts data in transit. But data at rest was not encrypted. Quiz answers, user profiles, and assessment results were stored in plaintext in the database. If an attacker gained access to the database, they would have full visibility into every user's data. I implemented encryption at rest using database-level encryption, which encrypts the entire database file so that physical access to the storage does not expose the data.
