Personality Test Scoring Algorithms: From Simple Tallies to Weighted Models
How does a quiz turn answers into a personality type? I built four different scoring algorithms and compared them. Here is. The scoring algorithm is the hidden engine of every personality quiz. Users see questions and results, but the scoring determines which result they get. A bad scoring algorithm produces random feeling results that users do not trust. A good algorithm produces results that feel accurate and personalized. I built four different scoring algorithms for the same set of quiz questions and compared how users perceived the results. The differences were larger than I expected. Algorithm One: Simple Tally The simplest scoring algorithm counts how many answers map to each result and picks the result with the most matches. If a quiz has four possible results, each answer is tagged with one of the four results, and the result with the most tags wins. This is the algorithm I started with, and it works for quizzes where each question cleanly maps to one result. The problem with simple tally is that it treats all questions as equally important.
